Clash of the Bowls Titans: Aylesham vs. Betteshanger Showdown

In the quaint little town of Aylesham, nestled amidst the rolling hills of Kent, there lies a secret battleground where the true titans of sport clash – the Aylesham Bowls Club. But across the green expanse, lurking in the shadows of rivalry, stands their arch-nemesis, Betteshanger Bowls Club. What ensues when these two titans collide is nothing short of legendary, a spectacle that has left many a spectator in stitches and the players in a tizzy.

The rivalry between these two clubs traces back to a time when they were both hardened colliery teams hailing from the depths of the Kent Coalfield. From rugby scrums to the serene greens of lawn bowls, the competitive fire burns bright, igniting a friendly tension that electrifies the atmosphere whenever they meet.

Enter the players, each with their own quirks and idiosyncrasies. The play begins with two trial ends, yes, you read that right,  thanks to Club Captain Carla Richardson-Bye-Chown who after many years is trying to get all club games played correctly.   First up we have Mr. ( I'll try to be up) Bob  the nerves will almost certainly get the better of him, causing his bowls to fall short like failed dreams.  Steve rolling fearlessly from his wheelchair, is a force to be reckoned not just for his bowls, but also for his ability to plough through the opposition and his own team mates usually in reverse,  with gay abandon he will roll through friend and foe,  wondering if the battery will last can send his game into freefall.  Then there's Mad Frank our very own Compo, who always wants to get the game finished as quickly as possible, no finesse for him, always hurrying everyone along, home and visiting players alike – rushing around may lose him a little weight which certainly wouldn't hurt his game, or his wardrobe choices.  Rick will chuck a few bowls up, living on past glories, and happy to relive the memories of past Betteshanger games, talking constantly of the games when he could actualy reach the jack and sometimes even got the line right, he still has the chalk on his wood from his only toucher back in 2001.

Leading the charge is Men's Captain Graham, hailing from Derbyshire, a County not exactly renowned for its bowls prowess or its knack for producing inspiring leaders. But Graham's determination knows no bounds, even if his team occasionally questions his strategic and team choices.

But Aylesham has their own secret weapon – Nick, whose uncanny ability to consume copious amounts of alcohol somehow translates into unbeatable prowess on the green. It's a tactic as old as time, and one that Betteshanger knows all too well as Nick was once a Betteshanger lad before converting, late in life on the orders of his wife.

And let's not forget the post-game festivities, where beer flows like water and camaraderie reigns supreme. Yet amidst the sea of ale, Aylesham's more modern men in their short shorts stand out like flamingos in a flock of pigeons, sipping on Bud Light, wine,  and other "girly" drinks with a sense of pride that's as amusing as it is endearing, the Gay Bar catering to everyone.

As the tension mounts and the bowls are rolled, the true spirit of camaraderie shines through, reminding us all that, at the end of the day, it's not about who wins or loses, but about the bonds forged on the green – and the laughs shared along the way. So here's to the Aylesham vs. Betteshanger game:  may the bowls be ever up and on line, the sun ever shine on your back, and the laughter never cease.

Kent County Bowling Association Presidents Pictures
It has been decided that the photographs of the two members who acheived the status of County President should be moved from pride of place in the bar area, to a position outside the men's toilet door, with one picture being defaced before it was rehung.
Leon King was the County President in 2007, having previously worked as Team Selector, Divisional Secretary, and Senior Squad Team Manager.
Leon also worked hard on behalf of Aylesham & Snowdown Bowls Club for over 20 years he put a lot of effort into the development of the club which was only newly formed in 1993. Leon was secretary for around 10 years, greenkeeper for 12 years and was responsible for obtaining the funds from CRT for the building of the bar, kitchen and store room extension and supervised its building, he has therefore invested a lot in the history and development of the club and he is proud of its current status.
Rick Travers was elected County President in 2016, Rick has held a number of positions within the County starting in 2005 when he was elected as the Aylesham & Snowdown Bowls Club delegate on council, he has served as Publicity Officer and webmaster since 2007, Rick became County Secretary in 2011 and to date still holds this Senior position within the County.
Rick has worked hard on behalf of Aylesham & Snowdown Bowls Club, he has been the Club Captain, Bar Manager, Entertainment Manager, Long Mat Secretary, Competition Secretary, and also Club Chairman.
It is fully appreciated that times change, and respect for hard work and dedication is no longer felt important by the current committee who are dedicated to self importance and showing how well they can get by, hanging tenuously by their fingertips to the coat-tails of the past members who have done so much for the club.
Sadly the past members who agreed to allow their Merit Certicates from the County to be framed and hung with pride in our clubhouse have also been disrespected by having the Certificates removed. Obviously the currently elected committee are afraid to show just how much hard work and time past members  gave to gain that respect .
Members like,
Gwladys Wellings
Ernie Wellings,
Bill Field
Dave Roby
George Gilchrist
Gordon Parfitt
Along with others, whose names I sadly cannot recall but who were proud to have been recognised by the County.

Yardstick Singles.jpg
Just a week ago I suggested we hadn't seen the last of the winners of the Yardstick Pairs, then here we are today the 21st. April and Carl Moses has done it again, much to the consternation of some more experienced, and senior members , of whom it can be said, that despite having tried to play for years will never be bowlers all the time they have a hole in their arse.
Well done Carl keep it up, a legend in the making perhaps?

The club Friday night league began on the 19th. April at 6pm, some interesting results with the games being curtailed to just fourteen ends.
A bright sunny evening, but, unfortunately the thermometer couldn't push itself any higher that eight degrees, so a good effort from our players many of whom looked like eskimos with the incredible amount of clothing worn, of course there were one or two, in fact three players actually wearing shorts,  extremely white spindly legs  turning a shade of blue as the evening progressed. The teams for this league are reproduced below:

Pictured are the winners of our Yardstick Pairs competition, Carl Moses and Jamie Down.
The competition was played over three rounds, with one point awarded for each bowl within one yard of the jack. A simple competition, but an important start to the season, we will surely see both Carl and Jamie in the finals of many more competitions before the seasons end.

The above players all took part in our first match of the season the President v Captain game,  this was played on a for this time of Year somewhat unusually ,  warm sunny afternoon. President Emily Marsh and her team took the win by an embarrasingly high score, with exceptional skills showed by all her players, perhaps a lesson learnt by the Captains, but I doubt it very much.
A strange season ahead, as we now seem to have three Captains who are probably all sharing the single brain cell they have between them, three Captains and a selection committee, what could possibly go wrong,  what is it they say about what too many cooks manage to do ?

The quiz night was very successful, with seventeen teams taking part and  over £1,000 being raised by those teams.  The winners on the evening were a team led by Terry Davis, Terry's team very generously returned their prize money back into the monies being collected for the Charities
The Green opened for play on Monday 1st. April, although often damp, the weather has been mild and many players have taken advantage of the exceptionally early opening to practice ready for the coming season. The green is heavy as can be expected, but it is hoped the speed will increase as the brighter weather arrives. The green fees for roll ups is now £1.00 with the membership voting against the committee recomendation of £2.00, sometimes it's nice to see democracy in action, with the membership actually reminding the committee that they are elected to work for the members, not to rule over the members.
